german with a southern accent

or it comes out with a southern accent. so I've decided that I want to learn to speak German. this is because if I want to go to grad school, I have to speak a historically significant second language. apparently Spanish is not significant and I don't get that. also, two of my characters are German and sometimes think in German and I don't trust Google Translate. another reason is because I just want to learn another language. this isn't exactly easy where I live despite the fact that the University of Florida is here. so I've been investigating programs like Rosetta Stone and the like. I don't know how successful that will be because I think if you can't learn it in a classroom, the next best way is to just have your ass dropped off in the country and force yourself to learn it but that won't be happening any time soon. if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for me, let me know.

  1. Mm, language. The whole reason I never went further than a BA in history. While German's a good start (depending on what period you want to go further in), keep in mind you will need several others.

I would have done medieval/possibly earlier history. My advisor told me I'd need French, German, the old versions of them, and Latin. Just reading, mind, but I'd need to be able to read all of them to be able to read primary sources. And since I watch my grades go from an A- in French 101 to a C+ for French 202, I clearly wasn't cut out for the language requirements.

    Just something to think about.
